On October 16, 1944, Brett Halliday’s Michael Shayne came to radio. The “reckless, red-headed Irishman” had starred in a series of 20th Century Fox movies before he made his way to the airwaves. Wally Maher was the first to play Shayne on the radio, with Cathy Lewis as his secretary Phyllis Knight. In 1948, Shayne came back in a more hard-boiled, two-fisted portrayal from actor Jeff Chandler. Others who played Shayne include Robert Sterling, Donald Curtis, and Vinton Hayworth.

Back in Episode 11, we heard one of Michael Shayne’s adventures starring Jeff Chandler. Today, in honor of his anniversary, we’ll hear more of his radio exploits. For more old time radio detectives, click here to subscribe to the “Down These Mean Streets” podcast in iTunes.
