I’m in love. This darkling doll is reading the May, 1947 issue of Weird Tales, which makes her an ideal companion for any right-minded gentleman. She’s not even looking my way and yet I’m fully mesmerized by her giant eyes. What I wouldn’t give to know which issue this LIFE photograph appeared in, but an all-day search has yielded nothing. I wonder if she’s reading the H.P. Lovecraft poems, illustrated by Boris Dolgov, who also drew the magnificent cover.

I love how Shadows in Zamboula in advertised as an horror story, not as a Conan tale.
