Hi! I was wondering what being a comic book editor entails. What is a regular day like for you?

jordandwhiteqna answered:

I try to do the main bulk of my work in the Marvel offices from about 9:30 to 6, with an hour for lunch usually around 1. The main actual thing I do is read emails and respond and react to them in various ways. I get scripts emailed to me that I read and give notes on, I get art in from artists that I respond to and approve, I get notifications of lettering arriving. I get questions from the artists and writers working for me that we need to work out. I reach out to people whose deadlines are approaching about when their work will be in. I reach out to people about new jobs I have to offer them. And I have TONS of emails to and from Lucasfilm regarding Star Wars plans and approvals.

Editing comics, especially at Marvel, means juggling a million things at once. Just judging by the number of covers I have hanging on the walls of my office, my assistant Heather and I are working on at least 27 different issues of comics right now, all at different and varied stages of completion. You have to be able to somehow keep all of those things in your head at once, and be constantly triaging what thing is the most important to do next. The books going to press this Friday are usually the most pressing things…but sometimes you need to get a script approved so an artist has something to draw as soon as he finishes the next issue. Or you have to get a cover concept ready for a cover artist, so you can get the cover in for the Previews catalog.

It’s an incredibly hectic job, but a rewarding one.

The short, simple version of the editor’s job is that we’re in charge of making sure a comic gets to the presses on-time, within budget, and at the highest quality it can be when it gets there.
